Betsy Rawls at the 1969 LPGA Championship. She won by four strokes, securing one of her eight major titles. Betsy Rawls, who joined the Ladies Professional Golf Association in the early 1950s, when the tour was just getting started, and helped spark interest in the circuit while winning a record-setting four U.S. Women’s Open titles and serving as an executive and tournament director, died Oct. 21 at her home in Lewes, Del. It went up over my hands and arms and landed on the edge of the green.”

“I played with the boys except in tournaments, carried my own bag, did a little gambling — skin games, you know — and held my own. It was fun,” she recalled in “Gettin’ to the Dance Floor,” a golf oral history by Al Barkow.
