JUST IN: The Biden administration took a first step Tuesday toward imposing new rules on artificial intelligence-powered tools like Open AI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard.
The Commerce Department made a public request for comment on Tuesday regarding regulatory measures for AI. In particular, it asked about determining if new AI models will require certification.
“Responsible AI systems could bring enormous benefits, but only if we address their potential consequences and harms. For these systems to reach their full potential, companies and consumers need to be able to trust them,” said Alan Davidson, assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information and NTIA administrator, in a statement.
