President JoeBiden on Wednesday congratulated RepShontelBrown for winning her primary, an unusual step for the White House to take in an intraparty race.

In a statement, Biden said Brown’s win “was an important step forward toward building a better Ohio and a better America.”“I was proud to endorse Shontel in her primary bid for re-election because she has been a strong leader in Congress and a partner in the work to cut costs and create jobs,” Biden said. “She is focused on solutions that will matter most to Middle Class and working families, such as passing legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Brown defeated challenger and former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner in the state’s 11th Congressional District. The contest was a rematch of a special election last year with the same results. Biden in his statement did not name Turner, who had the backing of left-liberals, including Sen. Bernie Sanders . Turner previously worked for the Vermont senator’s presidential campaign and was on record speaking critically of Biden. Turner’s campaign had sought a rematch after changes to the district’s boundaries in the state’s redistricting process were thought to make it a more friendly environment for her.
