President Biden cajoled Republicans of getting out of the way of 'commonsense' gun laws on the anniversary of the Uvalde school shootings.

“We can’t end this epidemic until Congress passes common sense gun safety laws to keep weapons of war off our streets and out of the hands of dangerous people. Until states do the same thing,” Biden said, projecting a combination of sadness and frustration. “How many more parents will live their worst nightmare before we stand up the gun lobby?”Biden intends to ramp up pressure by convening law enforcement officials who support such bans, an aide said.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the top GOP negotiator on the post-Uvalde law Biden signed last summer, called the concept of a ban both futile and a nonstarter, politically. “We urge leaders in Congress and in state legislatures to meet this heartbreaking moment not just with words, but with action,” she said, emphasizing that the Uvalde killer used “a weapon of war” and that gun violence remains the leading cause of death for American children.

Biden aides say the law isn’t enough, and isn’t as effective as hoped because of spotty compliance or state privacy laws that preclude uploading juvenile crime or mental health records.
