Sixteen months after his inauguration, President Joe Biden will finally make his first trip to the region this Thursday with visits to South Korea and Japan
. And while the war in Ukraine dominates headlines and the attention of the West, the White House views the week ahead as a critical opportunity to tackle a wildly different but equally complex challenge: China.

But it will certainly be hard for Biden to escape the shadow of the Ukraine war. Both Japan and Korea have aided Ukraine’s effort to ward off Russia, which has its own Pacific presence. And the administration has explicitly and implicitly argued that helping Ukraine win the war will bolster the position of democratic governments in the East.
