Don Chen, a property owner in Fort Bend County, protests against SB 147 on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, at Houston City Hall in Houston. “It will affect many, many guys who are on the path to citizenship,” he said. “It’s just not right that we cannot own a home on the path to citizenship.” He added, “the Chinese Communist Party does not equal the person coming from China.

But Democrats and other critics call the legislation racist and xenophobic, saying it would only harm law-abiding people hoping to build a life in Texas.
