“The lack of discussion surrounding suicide and depression in New Jersey, specifically in the Black community, is a problem,” she said. “We need to start normalizing having these conversations around mental health.” The issue is so critical in New Jersey and beyond that the NAACP on Saturday hosted a discussion on suicide and mental health in Black America during its 113th national convention, where panelists shared ways to fight depression and thoughts of suicide through journaling, staying busy and seeking help.
Among Black children, suicides are up too, with Black children nearly twice as likely to die by suicide than white ones, according toExperts say mental health challenges sometimes stem from domestic violence, police brutality, abuse, racism, and day-to-day barriers that are difficult to discuss.
