Right: Israelis evacuate a site struck by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, in Ashkelon, southern Israel, Monday, Oct. 9, 2023. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken deleted a social media post Monday morning that expressed support for a "cease-fire" in Israel after Palestinian militants invaded the nation late last week.
"Turkish Foreign Minister @HakanFidan and I spoke further on Hamas' terrorist attacks on Israel," Blinken wrote. "I encouraged Türkiye's advocacy for a cease-fire and the release of all hostages held by Hamas immediately." Hamas, the terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, launched heavy rocket attacks against Israel on October 7. At roughly the same time, hundreds of Hamas militants breached the Gaza Strip's border with Israeli-controlled territory, leaving a path of death and destruction in their wake. Both major military offensives were conducted on the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah. At least 700 people in Israel are dead as a result of the attacks.
