Penn State transfer Gabby Blossom has been a catalyst for USD women's volleyball as it readies to host an NCAA Tournament Regional on Thursday
Jennifer Petrie was scrolling through the NCAA volleyball portal last December when the University of San Diego coach spotted a name that made her stop.“We wanted to have a setter that has experience leading a high-level offense,” said Petrie. “We reached out to her. She was our number one choice.”Ranked second in the nation, USD opens what it hopes will be a deep run into the 64-team NCAA Tournament come 7:30 p.m. Thursday when it faces Northern Colorado inside Jenny Craig Pavilion.
“She just has that natural talent,” said 6-foot-5 teammate Grace Frohling. “And it’s not just setting. Her defense is amazing.”The Toreros were looking for a talented setter. Blossom earned third team All-American honors in 2019 at Penn State. USD was looking for a veteran. Blossom played four years in Happy Valley, starting three of those seasons.
But with NCAA athletes being granted an extra year of eligibility because of Covid, Blossom wanted a new life experience, with caveats.And she wanted a program with an impeccable reputation. “In the end, everything lived up to the hype. I came on campus and felt that I was supposed to be here. I think when you get older and have a gut feeling, you go with it.”
“I think went well because we knew we needed her,” said Frohling. “There was no question of respecting her when she came in.”
