In a world where nobody is satisfied with BMW’s grille design, the company may soon give you the chance to change it yourself.
, the company debuted a further development of its exterior light panel technology that allows different colors, and now shapes, to be displayed on the surface of the vehicle. A new patent seems to suggest that technology may soon redefine the face of BMW with a single light-emitting panel that integrates and hides the headlights.
A material on the surface of the panel can switch from opaque to transparent, like to reveal the headlights from beneath the previously blacked-out form. This is similar to ability to modify the appearance of its front light-emitting, color-changing e-ink panel into different"grille" shapes.It's obviously most likely that this sort of fascia design technology would be earmarked for BMW's future electric vehicles, which likely won't need the direct cooling afforded by a traditionally open grille in the front of the car. This technology preserves the BMW kidneys while smoothing over the front of the car for improved aerodynamics.
