Boeing says Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways has committed to buy up to 50 Boeing 737 Max jets and as many as 50 of the company's cargo planes. It's a coup for the U.S. aircraft maker in its competition with European rival Airbus.

The companies did not disclose financial terms. The list price of the planes would total about $27 billion, but airlines routinely get deep discounts.
