In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapter 66, the series continues to focus on Naruto's biological son rather than allowing Kawaki to meet the spin-off's most intriguing villain yet - Ada.
Aside from being a wildly more compelling character, Kawaki should have been the main focus in at least the last few chapters instead of Naruto's biological son Boruto. The proof lies in both the fact that Kawaki could have already met the spin-off's best villain by far and because of how lackluster a possible death of a certain character feels when the series obviously put a lot of weight behind it.
Wanting to protect Naruto, Kawaki first went against the Hokage's will to confront the last active Inner named Code from the organization Kara. The young shinobi believed that since he'd escaped from Kara after the organization's members had raised him to be the next vessel of their leader Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, his capture would save Naruto.
Luckily, some good has come from Boruto involving himself in Kawaki's business with Code, and the reasons are, of course, all tied to Kawaki's character. Kawaki regains his Karma after it was assumed he'd lost the power forever and hurts Naruto, the one man he cares about more than anyone else, by trying to kill his Momoshiki-possessed son Boruto. But ironically, all of these milestones didn't have to occur during this particular confrontation.
Right now, all of the focus is on Boruto and his apparent death when it's obvious that Naruto's son hasn't been enough of a draw to attract more readers. If this spin-off series is ever going to recover from its continual poor performance, then the formula needs to change - and fast. Also, it's obvious that he won't die, so why drag out the charade further than it has to be? .
