Rice can still get into postseason with a 5-win team if enough teams do not reach six wins and cannot fill the 82 available sports for the 41 bowl games.
Rice played well enough to win, but could not hold onto a fourth-quarter lead, coming up short to North Texas. The Mean Green dealt the Owls a tough 21-17 loss, depriving the visitors a six-win season on Saturday afternoon inside Apogee Stadium in Denton.
Saturday was the final game for Rice as a member of Conference USA. The Owls join the American Athletic in 2023. Padgett passed for 229 yards, including a 48-yard scoring pass to true freshman Braylen Walker. Walker scored on a wheel route coming out of the backfield. Padgett also completed a 48-yard gain to Juma Otoviano out of the backfield, setting up Uriah West’s 1-yard run for the Owls’ first touchdown.
