'We don't need more gas stations,' argues columnist James Briggs.

Detroit Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan talks about the ABC's of electric vehiclesisn’t breaking ground on a gas station at the edge of residential neighborhoods north of downtown.

“The fuel center concept for that store has been in existence for a number of years, well before I joined Kroger,” Eric Halvorson, Kroger’s manager of corporate affairs, told me in an email. “So, we have not rushed to build it. We have preferred a patient approach. That’s why we had the recent discussion with neighbors. And we listened to them.”

City-County Council President Vop Osili, whose district includes the Kroger, told me neighborhood feedback “reinforces my own conviction that this is not appropriate.” Indeed, putting a gas station on 16th Street only makes sense to Kroger, plus maybe a smattering of car commuters who don't otherwise care about the surrounding area.by Jackson Dorsey, an assistant professor at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, along with co-authors Ashley Langer and Shaun McRae, offers a clue as to why grocery store chains might still be investing in soon-to-be obsolete fueling stations: They bring people inside stores.
