The Russia Brittney Griner trial is resuming amid intensified diplomacy.

If conviction is a foregone conclusion, it would also potentially be a step forward. Russian officials have said no release of Griner could occur until the judicial process is completed.

"It seems that she is in fact being used as a political bargaining chip - and the administration has already designated her as wrongfully detained presumably because they think she is being used as a political pawn," Tom Firestone told The Associated Press.
