Double dose of disappointment befalls Deer Park teams at Zone

A member of the Outlaws all-star team receives some assistance in stretching prior to a game at the Ruth Minchen Athletic Complex Friday. There were a couple of questionable calls in the seventh and final inning of Pony Baseball’s South Zone Bronco Division semifinal contest Saturday, but there’s no question who’s going to the Bronco World Series.

Joining Laredo for the ultimate in the Mustang competition will be La Porte’s all-stars. In the championship game of that division Saturday afternoon, Laredo coasted to a 12-2 win. Sauceda struck out 10 in five and two-third innings, facing the minimum number of batters in every inning but that dreaded second frame. Sauceda was especially tough against the meat of Laredo’s batting order. The first four batters were only 2-of-12, striking out seven times.

And it started with a controversial ruling against Deer Park for obstruction by catcher Mason Holman. Rules state that a catcher must have possession of the ball in order to block the plate. Holman initially didn’t have possession of the ball, but the San Juan runner, for whatever reason, applied the brakes, giving Holman time to grab the ball with his bare hand and making the tag before the runner touched the plate.
