Cleveland blows open a tight game with six-run burst in the eighth inning of 7-0 shutout
San Diego Padres’ Jackson Merrill reacts after a strike out by Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Tanner Bibee during the fourth inning of a baseball game in Cleveland, Friday, July 19, 2024. Wad up the lip service about all games counting the same during Major League Baseball’s 162-game slog. It’s statistically true, there’s no denying it.
There are only 62 games left after Friday’s 7-0 loss to the Guardians that unraveled down the stretch at Progressive Field. The Guardians offered a master class in transforming little things into big and game-altering things. The difference between winning and losing games, making or not making the playoffs, can be as small as the fifth inning.
It’s about winning enough now to weather the storm until All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. returns, along with front-line starter Joe Musgrove. The pair are talented and stingy, making every possible win amplified. The longer a team can keep their nose in things, especially when the sledding toughens, the better the chances others stub toes along the way.
For the first time in franchise history, the Padres led the majors in hits at the All-Star break. It’s just the second time ever, and first since 1992, that the club led the NL in batting average at this point.
