This is the greatest pasta sauce. Possibly the Platonic Ideal of Tomato Sauce. If you love pasta, and tomato sauce, you will dream about how good this is. It's the perfect balance of sweetness and brightness from the tomatoes, savouriness from the anchovies and garlic, richness from butter, and that mild spice from the red pepper flakes. You will have no choice but to do the chef kiss when you eat it.

cooked this dish twice while couch surfing in Southern Europe, once in Barcelona and once in Porto. Neither location had anchovies for some reason, so I had to use sardines. I also couldn't find red pepper flakes, so I just used a lot of peppercorns. However, it was still delicious! Both my hosts loved it.Excellent basic easy recipe! Didn't have anchovies on hand, so substituted capers instead. Added also leftover roasted vegetables from my fridge and used a fusilli noodle.
