A state of emergency remains in effect in Buffalo's Erie County, New York, after a historic blizzard dropped feet of snow in some locations on Christmas and led to dozens of deaths, according to county officials.

More than 4 feet of snow with considerably higher drifts effectively buried roads and homes in Erie County, including Watertown, Hamburg and Buffalo, New York. County services remain closed through Wednesday to allow essential workers to be dedicated to the weather emergency.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz expressed his frustration on with people ignoring the driving ban in Buffalo and hindering recovery efforts. At least 28 dead in Erie County, New York following a blizzard. Buffalo Airport has seen more 50 inches of snow since Friday. NYS Div. of Homeland Security & Emergency Services on December 24, 2022, helping rescue two people who were stranded in a car since Friday and brought them home.Snow is still covering most streets in Buffalo, and roads remain impassable. As of Tuesday, the driving ban has been reduced to an advisory for Cheektowaga and Lackawanna, but a travel ban remains in effect for Buffalo.

Buffalo resident Katherine Bundt says the dig out has begun in her neighborhood following a blizzard. Snow drifts are seen covering homes and vehicles across western New York. Bundt is thankful that her family ‘came out much luckier than a lot of people in the city did.’
