Many of the hospitalized children, especially those needing intensive care, have a potentially life-threatening illness called respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. RSV cases have been surging in Pennsylvania and across the United States for nearly two months. Yet that could be on the verge of changing. During the week ending Saturday, flu cases in Pennsylvania soared to the highest level in a decade, according to tracking by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Statewide, 93% of all pediatric beds were occupied and 87% of all pediatric ICU beds were occupied, according to HAP.
