The call comes more than two months after Russia began its assault on Ukraine in Europe’s largest ground offensive since World War II. In that time, more than 3,200 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, the United Nations’ Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said Thursday. Bush commended the courage of the Ukrainian people, saying that Zelenskyy assured him they “will not waver in their fight against [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s barbarism and thuggery.”
In a news release, Zelenskyy’s office said the president considered meeting Bush, whom he called “an example of a strong leader,” an honor. During the call, Zelenskyy said he has seen how the American people have shown Ukrainians support on social media, during protests and by displaying Ukrainian flags.
