Pacific waters along the California coastline already have risen about one foot over the past century, and the series of atmospheric river storms recently have sent the biggest waves to hit many beach communities in decades

After an an 800-foot wharf was torn in half in Capitola, locals worry about growing vulnerability to climate changeThe storms that battered California last month caused floods, mudslides, and blackouts across the state, but few communities felt their power more than ones like the oceanside village of Capitola, where an 800-foot wharf that serves as its biggest tourist attraction was torn in half.

Among the hardest hit was Santa Cruz County, where in addition to the fallout at Capitola, another pier was destroyed along with a state campground. Capitola City Manager Jamie Goldstein estimated damages at $3 million, although business leaders say the economic toll could be higher if the community doesn’t fully reopen for the peak summer tourist season.
