The California bill would block the state from prosecuting people who violate abortion bans in Texas or Oklahoma.
The California Assembly passed legislation Monday that would stop the state from punishing people under the abortion bans in other states like those in Texas and Oklahoma.Anadolu Agency via Getty ImagesThe law is a direct response to a Texas abortion ban that is enforced through civil lawsuits against those who “aid or abet” the procedure—which can be filed in other states besides Texas—and has already been copied in Idaho and Oklahoma .
As a result, the California bill which passed Monday in a 56-16 vote, would bar California courts from prosecuting people under such abortion bans, and would prohibit the state from enforcing any punishment under those anti-abortion laws.
The Connecticut law also lets people who have been prosecuted in other states for aiding or abetting an abortion sue for damages.
