Chen, a Democrat running against the freshman Republican congresswoman, attacked Steel over her accent while speaking at an April 7 meet and greet in a synagogue.

A Steel campaign spokesperson condemned Chen’s comments as "racist" and called on the Democrat to apologize. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of California called on the House Democrats' national campaign arm to pull Chen from their "Red to Blue" program "in light of his racist attack" on Steel.
