Elected officials and local business owners are pleading for federal aid as California flood victims recover.
PAJARO — Two weeks after a devastating flood ravaged this small Monterey County town, local elected officials and small business owners are banding together to put pressure on Gov. Gavin Newsom to call on President Joe Biden to open up FEMA aid for families and businesses impacted by the disaster.
Finding their places of work flooded out on Friday, a coalition of 14 local businesses are imploring FEMA and Gov. Newsom “to provide direct financial assistance to our businesses beyond just loans.” Moran estimated there’s about $120,000 in totaled and damaged cars alone, not to mention the thousands lost in damaged equipment and stolen goods. Moran lost a jukebox, a welding machine and dozens of small and medium-sized tools to looters in the days that Pajaro residents and business owners were kept from entering the town by local police.
Business owners aren’t the only ones putting pressure on Newsom and Biden to give more aid to Pajaro. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, who represents Pajaro, urged the state to make a request for federal aid in a statement to this new organization. Santa Cruz County Supervisor Felipe Hernandez sent a letter to Gov. Newsom on March 23 asking for specific help to undocumented community members in the Pajaro Valley that lost personal property, their homes and in some cases their jobs because of the flooding.
