Cameron Payne is listed as probable for Wednesday's game against Portland as the lefty point guard missed 16 straight games with a right wrist sprain.
“Unfortunately, putting Cam in the starting lineup, it really depletes your bench,” Williams said. “If you look at the bench scoring the other day, it was like man, this is lopsided, but Cam had 20-plus points, but he was in the starting lineup and it just depends on how you look at the numbers.”
The starting unit of Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, Deandre Ayton, Johnson and Booker have accounted for 81.7% of the team’s points in the last three games, but that hasn’t been necessarily a good thing for the Suns.L, 117-102 vs. NOLA: Bridges 8, Crowder 12, Ayton 20, Johnson, 15, Booker 30=85 points .“I think it will give us a bit more balance,” continued Williams about having Payne in the starting lineup.
“It frees Book up to not having to dribble the ball 300-plus times a game. That’s a lot, and we’ve done studies on guys who dribble the ball that much. They get tired and it’s just a fact. And I think that’s why Chris loves playing with guys like Book and Cam because another guy who can handle the ball keeps you fresh at the end of games.”
