Opening day of Canadian Western Agribition put a particular spotlight on a smaller section of the livestock industry: alpaca farming.

“Shows are really the best way to promote your animals,, because that’s feathers in your cap; it gets your name out there,” she said. As fleece is the main byproduct for alpaca farmers, the detailed feedback delivered by a knowledgable judge on the quality of an alpaca’s shear is a huge piece for breeders like Baloun.
“It’s high-end. These animals are going to be the best, really, that there are in the country,” she said.When asked why she chose to get into raising alpacas, Baloun said she was looking for a low-risk livestock investment she could operate with her then-young children, and found a connection with them.Article content
