The visit of Siamese Kings Rama V and Rama VII to Curug Dago, 127 years ago, as evidenced by two inscriptions, became the basis for strengthening close relations between the two countries.
During the reign of King Mongkut, neighboring countries of Siam were already colonized. King Mongkut prepared several strategies to prevent colonialism in Thailand.
At a very young age, Chulalongkorn was determined to make Siam a sovereign and prosperous country with extraordinary vision. Then, at the age of 17, in 1871, Chulalongkorn decided to visit abroad and his first destination was Java with a brief stopover in Singapore. Chulalongkorn observed many new things that did not exist in Siam, such as military barracks, post offices, schools, hospitals, courts, telegraph offices, prisons, and banks. In order to obtain ideas for reforming Siam, Chulalongkorn wanted to study how colonial powers managed their administrative territories.
"To monitor developments first-hand, he often travels out of town and disguises himself as an ordinary person in order to obtain direct information about the conditions of his people and the behavior of local officials," said Shwita.After working hard for 20 years and facing the colonial threat from France, Chulalongkorn fell ill. The royal doctor then advised him to rest, seek medical treatment, and take a vacation in Java with his family.
Upon arriving in Bandung, he immediately went to Curug Dago to see the Chulalongkorn inscription. At that time, he also joined in carving his initials on two adjacent stones.The two Thai kings' inscriptions were once forgotten and their whereabouts were unknown. Then, in 1986, Omas Witarsa and Yayan Sopian met Abah Iyun , an elder of Punuk Curug Village.Abah Iyun once shared his story of often seeing Dutch people gather around the stone with the inscription of Raja Siam.
Below it, there are two strokes of the numbers three and four. In the third row, there are five strokes, two letters, and three numbers, namely Ra and Sok . Ratanoksin is another name for Bangkok, which was founded in 1782 by the Chakri Dynasty. There are also the numbers 1, 2, and 0 written, which means that the capital of Ratanakosin is 120 years old.
