Dr. Friend hopefully can bring needed change to the district.
Dr. Colleen Friend recently sang praises about the Carlisle Area School District. I am writing to share my family’s experience with the district.
Last August my son was violently assaulted in the high school parking lot, resulting in seizures, a traumatic brain injury, and a broken clavicle. He was a victim of bullying before, during, and after the attack. While my son lay having a seizure in the parking lot, a student took a photo and shared on social media. Multiple other students made fun of him through posts/memes.
Weeks later, while meeting with administrators I asked, “Why would students think it was okay to take photos of someone having a medical emergency?” One administrator shrugged his shoulders and said, “That’s what they do.” This statement spoke volumes about the school climate and culture. If adults condone bullying behavior, it will continue. I knew in that moment the school was not a safe environment.
Dr. Michael Black was promoted and tasked with “district culture and climate, safety, and security …” Here are a few suggestions:2. Thoroughly investigate all reports of bullying before, during, and after incidents.4. Develop stronger policies for working with local police departments.I hope Dr. Friend can bring needed change to the district. If not, be warned, your child could be the next victim.
