The world-renowned nonprofit, Gemological Institute of America, is reducing its local workforce by approximately 20 percent.
The Gemological Institute of America, known worldwide for its research into diamonds, colored gems and pearls, is cutting 151 workers at its global headquarters in Carlsbad because of an economic downturn in the industry.
Additionally, the North County facility houses a library of jewel-related publications and exhibits dazzling gems to the public. “We receive stones generally from either the companies that cut and polish them or sometimes from the companies that make the actual jewelry pieces, or sometimes from retailers and also from consumers,” said GIA director of communications Stephen Morisseau. “And there’s just been a general downturn in those submissions because of the general economic conditions affecting the global gem and jewelry trade.
