St. Clair County District Attorney Lyle Harmon on Monday said a warrant has been issued against Marcus Spanevelo for abuse of corpse in connection with the death of Cassie Carli, a Florida woman whose body was found in a shallow grave in Alabama.

On Friday, Harmon said, Spanevalo signed documents agreeing to extradition to Alabama. On Monday he remained in the Santa Rosa County Jail in Florida.

“In an effort to prosecute the strongest case, and after communicating with law enforcement agencies in both states, the Office of the State Attorney believes that in the interest of justice, the actions of Marcus Spanevelo are most appropriately prosecuted in Alabama,’’ WALA television station reported, quoting court filings. “Spanevelo will be transported by law enforcement to Alabama.”

“While my office has no authority to dictate the criminal charges which the State of Florida may bring or the ability to influence the timing of how they travel through their court system, I appreciate the open and candid discussions that have taken place between the Office of the State Attorney in Florida and my office regarding this investigation,’’ Harmon said. “I will continue to lend them whatever assistance the law allows with the hope that the Carli family will have closure.
