Like the Great Red Snapper Count before it, the Greater Amberjack Count is a far-reaching effort to determine the size of the fish population, its distribution and its preference for various type of habitat. This knowledge, in turn, will guide efforts to regulate the fishery. The National Marine Fisheries Service considers greater amberjack to be overfished in the Gulf of Mexico but not in the south Atlantic.
According to USA, 450 fish will have electronic transmitters implanted in their bodies. These will be tracked by underwater acoustic receivers in the Gulf and the South Atlantic. “The success of the conventional tagging study critically depends on participation from fishermen of all sectors,” according to a USA news release.
