Catching up with Chris Burke, the Astros' original LDS 18th-inning homer hero

“I didn't see any of it,” Burke said with a laugh when reached by phone Sunday. “I saw highlights this morning, but I didn't watch one pitch of it live.”

Like Peña, Burke was a rookie playing in his first postseason when he etched his name into Astros playoff lore. Peña was a member of the Astros’ taxi squad during the 2021 postseason but did not make his major league debut until opening day in 2022. The 2005 game had substantially more scoring action than Saturday’s Astros-Mariners game, which featured an incredible pitching duel and was the first game in MLB postseason history to be scoreless after 15 innings. The Astros and Braves were tied at 6 when Burke came up to bat with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the 18th inning against Atlanta righty Joey Devine.

“We had to completely empty the tank,” Burke recalled. “ Pettitte was home sick, and he even called the clubhouse to see if they wanted him to come back to the stadium. We were out of options, so we used our seven-time Cy Young Award winner.”
