In advance of the storm, roughly 100 flights to and from Taiwan were canceled Wednesday, as were a similar number of local ferries, the Associated Press. Schools were also closed in coastal regions and on outlying islands as conditions deteriorated through the day.In its final hours over the Philippine Sea, Koinu is poised to make landfall near the southern tip of Taiwan around 8 a.m.

Periods of heavy rain may persist through at least late Friday in Taiwan, especially across the mountains of the southeast, where moist onshore winds and flow toward eastern-facing mountain slopes will intensify downpours.Rainfall totals of 8 to 12 inches should be widespread across the island’s south and in mountainous regions in the east. Localized totals considerably higher than that will also be possible.
