Victory gives Bob Baffert tie for training title
Cave Rock gave trainer Bob Baffert a 1-2 finish in the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith rode three winners Sunday as the “fantastic” 82nd summer meeting at Del Mar ended on a beautiful day and note.
“There are so many positives for this season,” Rubinstein continued. “John Beggin and his staff did a tremendous job keeping the turf course so well prepared during the meeting. The racing office … the ship-and-win program to attract entries from outside the area was up 19 percent. So many positives.”Jockey champion Juan Hernandez capped the meeting by riding Cave Rock to a 5¼-length win over stablemate Havnameltdown to win the $300,000 Futurity — a seven-furlong sprint on the dirt.
“He’s a real good horse, very professional and fast,” said Hernandez of the son of Arrogate. “He broke a step slow, but then he got right in gear. I tried to slow him down some, but he wasn’t having it. So I just let him go and do his thing. He’s something.” “In these races, you have to play the break and Juan took advantage of that and never looked back,” said Jimmy Barnes, Baffert’s assistant. The trainer was in Kentucky this weekend for the Keeneland sales.
