free agent fits for Cavs?A key contributor since 2017 -- as a starter and reserve -- Osman averaged 8.7 points this past season while shooting 45.1% from the field and 37.2% from 3-point range, helping the Cavs win 51 games and advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2018. They were eliminated in five games in the first round by the New York Knicks.
While Osman’s role has fluctuated the last few years, leading to some uncertainty about his future with the Cavs, he has grown into a capable outside shooter and will remain on the roster -- for now. Because of his expiring contract, Osman holds value as a potential offseason trade chip. Among other things, the Cavs are expected to explore sign-and-trade possibilities when free agency opens at 6 p.m. Friday and Osman’s salary could be used as a linchpin in those talks.
A 2019 first-round pick, the theoretical sharpshooter played just 84 games due to a variety of untimely injuries. The value of his QO was around $5 million for this coming season and the Cavs weren’t willing to pay Windler that much, especially given his lengthy injury history and place within the organizational hierarchy. If Windler finds a suitor in free agency, he will likely agree to a deal for much less than that.
