The 400 workers — including surgical technicians, dietitians, lab assistants, nursing assistants, pharmacists and others — are demanding Cedars boost wages and add more staffing.

The union said some employees earn barely above minimum wage and have to work a second job to live within commuting distance of Marina del Rey.

Healthcare workers from Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital held a protest Wednesday, Nov. 30 outside the Beverly Hilton, claiming they’re underpaid and short-staffed, which puts patients at risk. In a statement issued Wednesday, Cedars said the hospital has offered strong, market-based pay and benefits for its SEIU-UHW-represented staff, including increased minimum pay rates each contract year.

Cedars said it’s not proposing to reduce starting pay or deny leaves of absence, as the union claims, as doing so would hamper its ability to attract and retain staff. Martinez said she’s stretched thin at work. There should be two ultrasound technologists on duty during any given shift, she said, but often it’s just her.
