Randy Lavender was able to get Centennial to play through injuries on its way to the school's first 5A state basketball championship.

Peoria Centennial won its first state basketball championship during a season that at times didn't seem probable.

And the Coyotes' best player, sharp-shooting senior All-Arizona guard Jake Lifgren, was out for nine games with an injury with another key guard, Abe Rangel, missing five games. "The keys to this team was being able to play through injuries and players being able to step up while starters like Jake and Abe were out," Lavender said."Emery Young did a good job in picking up the scoring and being more of a leader.
