'The pattern of poverty and crime that exists in my home country is something I am committed to escaping, and I am not alone.'
It is hopeful to see how there are many young people who still believe in the country, despite the different challenges they fight against. A group of youth leaders from San Salvador’s Iberia community, addresses the violence and stigmatization each day using dance, graffiti, and other artistic expressions.
I have joined my peers in trying to change our country for the better. I began interning outside of the call center, at Alianza Americas, an organization that works transnationally to address the factors forcing migration, because I am committed to fighting for equality, justice, and government accountability to address the issues that are causing so many of our people to leave their homes.
Groups of young people have made tremendous strides toward calling attention to the danger and inequality we have been forced to live in. We are speaking out, taking to the streets, and doing our part to demand real, systemic change. We are seeking well-paying jobs and access to benefits and demanding our government addresses the violence that is plaguing our streets.
