Waters inspired many in the mid-state with his musical talents and commitment to Harrisburg.
Theatre Harrisburg's 27th Arts Awards for Distinguished Service to the Arts in the Capital Region event was held at the Whitaker Center on Sunday, June 3, 2019. Ronnie Waters, the 2019 Arts Award individual recipient, is surrounded by his children, Gary Waters Sr., Jhansi Waters, Wanda Green, Cheryl Baskerville Waters and Jill Miller.
Waters, 87, influenced droves of aspiring mid-state youth jazz performers for decades. He sat at the helm of the Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz Youth All-Star Band beginning in 1983. A 1952 John Harris High School graduate, Waters was a member of the marching and symphonic wind bands. According to a HighMark Blue Shield biography of Waters, he went to “Caplan’s Department Store to buy jazz records” and went to shows at the Forum or State Theater to see greats like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Dizzy Gillespie.
He continued his love for music at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. And, also in the U.S. Army, where he served as dance band director of the 427th Army Band in Europe.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
