The Golden Eagles are 7-0 and looking like a team that could win a championship in 2023.
Central Regional has come out with seven straight victories and that includes three wins in Shore Conference Tournament Group 7 pod play. A 4-1 win over Manasquan on Friday clinched a spot in this year’s tournament, which is using a World Cup style to determine which teams make the field.
It’s been 10 years since this program made it to the Shore Conference final, but the way this team is playing right now, making a run like that doesn’t seem that far out of reach. “We’re making a name for ourselves and coming together to show everyone what Central Regional girls soccer can do,” said senior midfielder, a team captain who is committed to play at Lafayette. “It’s really special that we can all come together and play this well. We’re doing things that we never thought could happen and now it’s the kind of thing that’s expected of us.”
Harmon stepped up last year and helped Central Regional finish 13-5-1 under first-year coach Marykate Sullivan. Hannah Lewis, a James Madison commit for lacrosse, turned heads with 23 goals during that run, but Harmon’s 15 assists were just as noteworthy. The talented midfielder’s ability to play the ball past the defense and into space to open teammates really unlock the offense.
This season, Central Regional needed someone to step in and help replicate what Lewis did as a scorer. Harmon’s career-high was five goals, but she saw a void that needed to be filled and jump at it. The senior has 14 goals this fall and leads an offense that is averaging 4.7 goals per game.Samantha VersnelVersnal had double-digit assists a year ago as a facilitator, but she’s also putting up career numbers now and has five goals and six assists.
