The beloved restaurant, whose lease the city opted not to renew, found itself in hot water over late rent and bad checks.

Cha-Cha’s New Gen Cafe was a bad investment

Cha-Cha’s will remain on a month-to-month basis as the city opens the property for competitive bids from other businesses. The popular restaurant initially had until June 30 to vacate the property.City Council in April decided not to renew Cha-Cha's lease, as the Express-News reported. But this week the city decided to allow the restaurant to remain at the site on a month-to-month basis while Leon Valley seeks competitive bids from other potential occupants.

Rose Ryan, a board member for the Northwest San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is the Ruiz family that not only had an iconic restaurant business here for 32 years, but paid taxes and brought in sales tax dollars.”Opponents argued that Cha-Cha's has not shown a history of being profitable or offering regular payments, even with its rent reduced. When Ruiz was approached about renewing the lease and rising rent, she said she could not afford it.
