The decision ends a years-long battle over the controversial monument's fate

to"highlight Charlottesville’s African American history and culture of the African diaspora."

The museum's bid called for the statue to be melted and reformed into art in what it called its"Swords Into Plowshares" project. It's not clear what the final artwork will look like, but the museum said it plans to consult with the community over the next few months to come up with a design."Our hope with 'Swords Into Plowshares' is to create something that transforms what was once toxic in our public space into something beautiful and more reflective of our entire community," Dr. Andrea Douglas, executive director of the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, said.
