East Cleveland, once home to Cleveland’s elite, is now a place where police are conducting wild, reckless chases on the streets of this poverty-stricken city with a regularity unparalleled in Northeast Ohio.CLEVELAND, Ohio – During the first four months of 2021, East Cleveland police initiated in 105 chases where officers attempted to stop drivers for a variety of reasons. Many were for minor offenses, including tinted windows, expired license plates, and running stop signs and red lights.
In today’s fourth and final episode, “Driving in East Cleveland,” police Chief Scott Gardner explains why his officers will continue to chase. He said the pursuits have reduced crime; homicides and robberies are down, Gardner said. In addition, Jim Gilbert, Chief Deputy of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Columbus, offers a glimpse of a new technology called Star Chase – a GPS device that could limit pursuits.
