In light of new data showing China's population shrinking for the second year running, a Shanghai-based think tank has drastically changed its 2100 forecast.
China's population of over 1.4 billion could drop by a precipitous 60 percent by the end of the century, according to a Chinese think tank.By 2100, the world's second-largest population could number just 525 million, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences has predicted.The report came on the heels of Chinese statistics bureau data showing that more people died than were born in China for the second consecutive year in 2023.
However, more pressing may be the country's looming demographic crisis.'The share of Chinese people aged 65 and older will rise from 14 percent in 2020 to 35 percent in 2050,' Yi said. Elderly Chinese in 2020 were supported by an average of five youngers aged 20 to 64 in 2020. This will drop to a ratio of 2.4 workers per senior citizen by 2035 and 1.5 by 2050, Yi added.'By that point, China's pension crisis will develop into a humanitarian catastrophe,' Yi said.
