Chinese leader Xi Jinping holds 'long and meaningful' phone call with Ukraine's Zelensky, their first since Russia's full-scale invasion began
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke Wednesday with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Moscow’s most important diplomatic partner, in the first phone call between the two leaders since the start of Russia’s invasion. “I had a long and meaningful phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations,” Zelensky said.
In comparison, Xi has spoken to Russian leader Vladimir Putin five times since the invasion – including a face-to-face at the Kremlin when the Chinese leader visited Moscow last month and another in-person meeting at a regional summit in Central Asia last September. Reports that discussions were underway between China and Ukraine to arrange a call for their leaders first surfaced in March, in the lead-up to Xi’s state visit to Russia.

China, Ukraine leaders speak for first time since war beganUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have had a “long and meaningful” phone conversation, in their first known contact since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago. The call, which officials said lasted nearly an hour, is seen as a significant development in efforts to resolve the conflict. It comes two months after Beijing, which has long been aligned with Russia, said it wanted to act as a mediator in the war and after Xi visited Moscow last month. It also comes as Ukraine is readying its forces for an expected spring counteroffensive. Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson commended China’s approach but was scathing about Ukraine’s stance.
