, an amazing Italian initiative, that helped give designers including An Vandevorst and Filip Arickx, Sophia Kokosalaki, Haider Ackermann, Veronique Branquinho and Raf Simons footholds in the industry by giving them the opportunity to present two collections in Milan using the company’s leather. So the concept is one with roots, retooled for a sped-up industry and on-brand for a Gaultier, who never played by the rulebook.
When I heard the news, my inner DJ kicked in, and a snippet from an INXS song started playing on repeat;has been crooning three words to me for several hours now: “Two worlds collided.” It’s not only that Abe and Gaultier come from different cultures, East and West, but their generation gap—the former is Gen X, the latter a Boomer—enables them to approach the idea of being global designers differently.
