Preseason hype aside, Chris Beard’s first season at Texas should be counted as a success despite an early NCAA exit.AUSTIN — Late Sunday, in a quiet hallway outside the Texas locker room at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, coach Chris Beard seemed at conflict with his emotions.
But a trip to the Sweet 16, where Texas would’ve had a winnable matchup against No. 15 seed St. Peter’s, will have to wait. With Sunday night’s roller-coaster loss to the Boilermakers, it’ll be 14 years since the Longhorns last advanced to the second weekend of March Madness. Then came some serious portal work. Kentucky freshman Devin Askew was the first to officially submit his national letter of intent. Utah’s Timmy Allen and Creighton’s Christian Bishop followed not long after.
The Longhorns never quite reached the stratosphere of the national title contenders, though they bought into Beard’s way enough to become an elite defensive unit and score significant regular-season wins over No. 18 Tennessee, No. 20 Iowa State and No. 8 Kansas. Every player save Febres and graduate transfer Tristan Licon is eligible to return next season. It’s unlikely, but Jones could even come back for a seventh year at Texas. Same goes for the rest of the all-senior starting five: Allen, Bishop, Carr and Ramey.
