A year ago, McCaffrey was still the Carolina Panthers’ mainstay, after two injury-shortened seasons. At 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, he learned he got traded, and he was on the first flight the next morning to his new home, just down Highway 101 from his Stanford days.
McCaffrey became the 49ers’ catalyst in an offense replete with other stars. After making his 49ers debut in cameo fashion barely 48 hours after landing in the Bay Area, McCaffrey showed his multi-talented ability in his first full game, when he produced touchdowns rushing, receiving and even passing in a rout of the host Los Angeles Rams.
“For the first four weeks, I don’t remember anything,” McCaffrey said last week. “I was trying to detail the plays as much as I can. But I do remember that first game. Jerry was on the field and he came up to me and gave me a big greeting.”
