Christy Turlington Burns founded Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit dedicated to improving maternity care for women around the globe, shortly after experiencing birth complications during the delivery of her first child, in 2003. Over 20 years later, the supermodel recognizes we still have a long way to go when it comes to protecting the health of expectant mothers.

“I am motivated most days by the momentum that’s been gained in the last 14 years. There’s more bills and legislation that maternal health is a part of.”In the past two decades, maternal mortality in the United States has increased at an alarming rate, with some experts estimating it has doubled since 1999, disproportionately affecting Black and Native American mothers. And with the election ahead in November, the possibility of another Trump presidency looms over advocates’ work.
